Sport Tasman has been associated with the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon since the mid 1990's and was pleased to help celebrate it's 20th anniversary on Sunday, 4 March.

More than 100 volunteers made this year’s Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon at Tahuna Sands Reserve in Nelson a wonderful success for over 1,500 children. Sport Tasman arranges the course marshal volunteers each year and is delighted with the continuous generosity of Nelsonians.

Sporting heroes, including Triathlete’s Debbie Tanner and Aaron Barclay, joined the crowd at the event by cheering the kids on and handing out medals at the finish line

The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon holds the World Record for being the largest children’s sporting event of its kind in the world, and will travel to twelve cities and towns throughout New Zealand in 2012.

Over the past 20 years more than 200,000 New Zealand children have participated in the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon, including sporting stars Debbie Tanner, Alison Shanks and Andrea Hewitt at the start of their careers.

Volunteering is a fantastic way to connect with the community and Sport Tasman has plenty of opportunities in the future for local volunteers. Community groups that deserve a big ‘pat on the back’ for this year’s Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon include:

• Waimea College (cycle marshals)

• Dedicated volunteers from our community: Peter Preston, Helen Kay, Eric Peterson, Vicki Spiers and Denis Port.
