Secondary Schools

Our Regional Sports Director (RSD) works directly with schools and sports organisations to facilitate a variety of secondary school sports events across the region.  Students from Nelson, Marlborough and Golden Bay have the opportunity to participate and excel in their chosen sports at local, regional and national levels.

There is a nationwide network of RSDs around the country; each RSD facilitates training for and provides advice to their local school sports coordinators.  It is the role of Sport Tasman to work closely with Sport NZ, NZSSSC (New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council) and secondary school principals to ensure the RSD role enhances sport opportunities for students.

Sport Tasman is committed to encouraging increased participation in sport and recreation for the young people of the Tasman region.

In 2012 our region is host to the South Island Secondary Schools Athletics Champsionships (31 March - 1 April Saxton Field Athletics Track, Nelson), NZ Secondary Schools Kayak Slalom Championships (3-5 April, Murchison), NZ Secondary Schools Basketball Finals (1-6 October, Nelson), NZSS Basketball Juniors Zone 4 (1-3 September, Nelson), NZSS Fooltball boys Premier (3-7 September, Nelson), NZSS Hockey Girls Audrey Timlin Memorial (3-7 September, Blenheim), SISS Junior Volleyball and Beach Volleyball (26-30 November, Blenheim).

For detailed information on Secondary School Sport in the Tasman region please view the Directory and Event Calendar for 2012 which has information on events, contacts for sports and other useful information. If you would like a hard copy, contact the RSD on the details to the right.

Tasman Secondary Schools Sports Council (TSSSC)

The TSSSC is headed by a Chairman/ Principal and consists of a Sport Coordinator/Director representing each of the secondary schools in our region on matters relating specifically to secondary school sport.
The TSSSC understands the importance of providing quality sport for secondary school students, the promotion of sport and either to maintain or increase participation levels. The number of sporting opportunities is increasing annually, placing schools under increasing pressure to support all sports. The TSSSC consider a series of factors when scheduling events i.e. academic programmes, interschool exchanges, school camps, etc.

"Sport is many things - it's healthy, it's social, it's fun, it's a wise teacher, it's a peace-maker. But above all, it is a statement about life"
