Susan O'Rourke was visibly stunned and surprised when she was named Marlborough Sports Administrator of the Year at the annual Blenheim Roundtable Marlborough Sportsman of the Year awards on November 21st. The Picton Rowing Club secretary and treasurer claimed the honour ahead of four other very worthy nominees from other sports. The other nominees were; Bill Shadbolt (Bowling), Alvyn Meiklejohn (Volleyball), Jac Taylor (Basketball) and Les McKay (Harriers) Susan saluted the efforts of the other nominees, but her work with the Picton Rowing Club thoroughly deserved the accolade. Her enthusiasm and drive, her attention to detail as far as updating and researching club history and her ability to get people all working together to make the club better were key reasons for her nomination. |
Not only was Susan secretary/treasurer of the club, but she also played a major part in organising the 126th anniversary celebrations last year, which proved a big success, All her work is voluntary and her passion for the Picton Rowing Club goes back to her school days at Queen Charlotte College, when she rowed for Picton.
As well as overseeing the day-to-day running of the club, Susan played an integral part in organising the reunion and putting out an excellent book with a comprehensive history of the club. While the club has a superb facility in its idyllic setting on the shores of Picton Harbour at Shelly Beach, it faces big challenges, just like most sports organisations, to keep thriving.
Susan is part of an eight-person committee and much of their funding comes from the gymnasium operation and grants and from that income equipment and boats are kept as up to date as money will allow. Thanks to Susan's tireless efforts, the club history will continue to be updated for future generations and her community involvement in Picton is not restricted to the rowing club. The mother of three is on the board of trustees at Picton School, is Picton Community co-ordinator of the Resource Centre and is the Picton hubs co-ordinator
